(this is kinda a counter to my own post on this topic)
Maybe it's fine to have a complicated website. The only thing that has to stay the same is the /content/ as long as the content is in some form that can be read in the future I think that's probably ok.
Plain text is still the way to go. Currently i'm using sqlite (which I don't
see going anywhere) but a dump into a .sql
file is just plain text.
Whilst I think "complicated" sites are a ballache to maintain are they really? Maybe 1 week every 3 years or something. Is this not also the case with Linux? It can be a ballache to maintain and on the desktop things move fast and often do break and require fixing. But you learn so much doing that. Maybe it's ok.
New (to you) tech
You could rebuild your personal site in in new tech if you want to play with it. It could be the first thing you do if you learnt a new web technology. Constantly rebuild your website. Make it run in 100 microservices spread across 5 hosts in kubernetes. Then quickly realise that's very stupid.
Fun
The web, and your website should be fun (or at least interesting) and reflect who you are. As long as your content is readable do what you want.
I want to have a guestbook and a live chat function thing, that would be fun.
Buuut that won't be around forever, I'll get fed up of maintaing something just for the sake of it.
I recently added my analytics and devlog to this website. Now they do require some maintence but they are fun!
I've also added the status bar thing on my homepage.
Webrings
Speaking of fun, bring back webrings. Trouble is you kinda need a 3rd party to host them but you could organise a small one amoungst groups of friends. Well maybe you all just link to each other and that's fine.
NO ADS
Plz no adsense. I know it's easy to add but don't - BAD.
That being said, email me if you want constulting.
